St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( May 12, 1997) PHILIP AND MIDLAND STUDENTS WIN HONORS IN 1997 SDSM& T WEST RIVER MATH CONTEST Students from Philip High School and Midland High School dominated the Class B Geometry Division in the recent 1997 SDSM& T West River Math Contest. Approximately 300 students from 28 area high schools competed in this year's competition, which was held on the South Dakota Tech campus on April 26th. Dan Palecek and Amy Piroutek of Philip High School won 1st and 3rd place respectively in the Class B Geometry Division. Talon Saucerman and Jordan Tolton of Midland High School won 2nd and 5th place awards respectively in the same division. In the Class B Advanced Math Division, Ty Saucerman of Midland High School won 4th place honors. The schools were divided into two classes of competition based on enrollment. Philip and Midland High School students competed in Class B, which had 11 schools. Students competed in five contest divisions -- Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Advanced Math and Masters. Members of South Dakota Tech's Mathematics and Computer Science Department prepared and scored the tests.
