The following events are part of the celebrations: Friday, Feb. 16 Bridge Building Contest 4 p. m. Feb. 14 – entry deadline 2 p. m. Feb. 16 – bridge strength testing: Civil Mechanical Building SDSM& T students, tehcnicians, and faculty will test the maximum load of the cardboard bridges built by junior and senior high school students. Saturday, Feb. 17 Kids' Block Contest 10 a. m. �� Surbeck Center Ballroom Children, grades 1 through 6 compete at engineering a specified building project, using only interlocking building blocks and their imagination. Pre- registration is required. Tuesday, Feb. 20 Tuesday Forum – " The Jasper Fire" 11: 30- 1 p. m. - Surbeck Center, Bump Lounge Members of the United States Forest Service will demonstrate how GIS technology helped in the management of South Dakota's largest forest fire. They will explain how technology can be a major factor in the safety of the firefighters, equipment, and wildlife. ( The presentation begins at noon, will a buffet proceeding). Rube Goldberg Machine Contest 3- 5 p. m. - Surbeck Center Ballroom The object is to build a machine to accomplish the assigned duty ( select, clean, and peel an apple) in the most inefficient way using 20 steps or more. Wednesday, Feb. 21 Dr. Robert Zubrin, speaker - " The Case for Mars" 10 a. m. – Middle & High School Students, Surbeck Center Ballroom 4 p. m. – High School, SDSM& T Students, Public, Surbeck Center Ballroom Dr. Zubrin, founder of the Mars Society, will demonstrate a feasible plan to travel to Mars. He will explain step- by- step how we can use present- day technology to travel to Mars, produce fuel and oxygen on the planet's surface, build bases and settlements, and we can one day " terraform" Mars – a process that can alter the atmosphere of planets and pave the way for sustainable life. Book Signing Reception for Dr. Zubrin 5: 30- 6: 30 p. m. – Surbeck Center, South Lounge Copies of both of Dr. Zubrin's books, The Case for Mars: The Plan to Settle the Red Planet and Entering Space: Creating a Space Faring Civilization, will be available for purchase and signing. Thursday, Feb. 22 Recognition of Outstanding Graduates & Initiation into the Order of the Engineer 11 a. m. – Surbeck Center Ballroom Mayor Jim Shaw will give the Engineers Week Proclamation. Selected SDSM& T alumni who graduated ten years ago will be honored for their outstanding professional and civic achievements since their graduation. Initiates into the Order of the Engineer will be presented with rings and certificates of membership. Friday, Feb. 23 " Space to Learn" and " Bringing Remote Sensing Down to Earth" 9, 10, and 11 a. m. presentations – Surbeck Center Ballroom Engineer's Week presentations for middle school students. The South Dakota Space Grant Consortium, the Children's Science Center, and students who flew on NASA's KC- 135, will tell about space- based technologies and how they are a part of our everyday life. See Engineering and Science at Work at SDSM& T 10 a. m.- 2 p. m. Various departments will have displays, experiments, and interactive games to entertain and show " how things work" using everyday items such as dirt, water, and steam. " Land of Plenty" – a special first time session for teachers 10: 15 and 11: 15 a. m. – Surbeck Center, Bump Lounge Dr. Kathryn Johnson, a local environmental scientist with a national consulting practice, will speak on the findings of Congressional Commission on the Advancement of Women and Minorities in Science, Engineering, and Technology development. Dr. Johnson will recap the recommendations from the Commission and focus on those having to do with pre- college education and college preparation. Grubby Contests 2- 4 p. m. – Surbeck Center Snack Bar Students will be participating in games such as the egg drop, marble grope, bridge building, bubble blowing, balloons through a chicken wire cage, front end loader, forces in equilibrium, and the silly putty ball bounce. Annual Engineers Week Banquet 6 p. m. – Legion Room, Ramkota Inn A social time and dinner will proceed the Bill Craig Scholarship Presentation – " Engineer of the Year" Award and the " Young Engineer of the Year" Award and Presentation of nominations for Project of the Year – " Project of the Year" Award. Saturday, Feb. 24 Computer Programming Contest 9: 30 a. m.- 3: 30 p. m. – Electrical/ Physics Building, room 341 A contest for High Schools students who want to become computer programmers. Mathcounts 1- 4 p. m. – Classroom Building, room 204 A math contest for seventh and eighth grade students of West River area schools. ++ 30++ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 2001 02/ National Engineers Week) |
