TranscriptOffice of University Relations SDSM& T News 501 E. St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 12, 2001 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager 394- 6082 Founder of Mars Society to Speak Dr. Robert Zubrin, an astronautical engineer and founder of the Mars Society, will be the featured speaker for Engineers Week 2001 at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. On Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 10 a. m. and 4 p. m., he will demonstrate a feasible plan to travel to Mars. Dr. Zubrin resigned his position as staff engineer at Lockheed Martin Astronautics in Denver to form his own company, Pioneer Astronautics. His company, based in suburban Denver, develops ideas for NASA. In addition, Dr. Zubrin has written two books, The Case for Mars: The Plan to Settle the Red Planet and Entering Space: Creating a Space Faring Civilization. He has also written several articles and co- authored two other publications. Getting people to Mars is less about giant spaceships and more about moving packages, Zubrin has said. In his presentation he will explain step- by- step how we can use present- day technology to travel to Mars, produce fuel and oxygen on the planet's surface, build bases and settlements, and how we can one day " terraform" Mars a process that can alter the atmosphere of planets and pave the way for sustainable life. He adds that " Mars is the Rosetta Stone for letting us know whether we're alone in the universe or not… and that's worth finding out." There will be a press conference for Zubrin at 8: 30 a. m. Feb. 21 in the Surbeck Center Bump Lounge. His presentations will be held in the Surbeck Center Ballroom at 10 a. m. ( middle & high school students) and 4 p. m. ( high school, SDSM& T students and employees, and the general public). A book signing with Zubrin will be held after the presentation from 5: 30- 6: 30 p. m. in the Surbeck Center South Lounge. ++ 30++ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 2001 02/ Zubrin)
