MARCH MEDAL Twin Cities businessman and civic leader Lowery J. Smith was honored by the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T) during his alma mater's recent spring commencement ceremony. SDSM& T awarded Smith with the Guy E. March Medal, which recognizes a distinguished Tech alumnus for outstanding professional achievement. After graduating from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1951 with a BS degree in Geological Engineering, Smith began his career as a field geologist for Standard Oil Company of New Jersey ( Exxon) where he was the well geologist for exploration wells in South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. He also did geological field mapping in Wyoming and Colorado. From 1953 to 1964 Lowery was a Sales/ Service Representative for Hercules Powder Company. His sales territory included Wisconsin, Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Wyoming. In 1964 Smith accepted a position as sales representative and sales manager for the J. L. Shiely Company. During the next 25 years with that company, he served as Vice President of Sales and Marketing; President of their subsidiary company, Minnesota FracSand Company; and Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Between 1974 and 1979 his research and development created many new products that increased revenue by more than $ 1 million. Some of those products include Aglime, recreational aggregates for trails and ball diamonds, and limestone for power plant desulfurization of flew gas. He also developed the Construction Aggregate Manual to assist architects and engineers in specification writing. During his time at J. L. Sheily Company, annual sales grew from $ 4 million to nearly $ 50 million. In 1989 he retired after 25 years as an executive with the J. L. Shiely Company, a construction aggregate sales company. Smith currently is president and owner of Ag- Lime Sales Inc., a sales and marketing company whose primary activity is marketing agricultural liming materials to Minnesota agriculture customers. Over the years Smith has been very active in many community activities. He has served as a very active member and held many offices in the PTA, political state conventions, the Bethlehem Covenant Church, the St. Paul Winter Carnival, and the YMCA. In 1985 he received the WCCO Radio " Good Neighbor" recognition. Smith went to Chile in 1994, 1995 and 1996 with the Covenant Mission Connection and served on short term mission projects helping to build community churches. He also is very active in many professional societies -- National Crushed Stone Association, National Stone Association, Minnesota Surveyors and Engineers Society; and Minnesota Limestone Producers Association. In 1969 Lowery married Mary Ann Maines. He says, " She is my best friend and cherished companion during these past 28 years." They raised 5 children during those 28 years and are now enjoying 13 grandchildren. Smith has been a very strong supporter of his alma mater, South Dakota Tech. He helped found the Twin Cities Alumni Group in 1962. He has established several scholarships for students attending SDSM& T. He has served as Alumni President, has been a Foundation Trustee, serves on the Foundation Board of Directors, and is a National Co- Chair on the School of Mines Foundation - Vision 2000: Leadership for the Next Century Campaign. The steps that led him onto the SDSM& T campus in 1947 have taken him around the world to 36 foreign countries. The Guy E. March Silver Medal was established in 1975 in remembrance of the exemplary service provided by Dr. Guy E. March to the students, faculty, staff and alumni of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Until his death in 1981, Dr. March contributed nearly 60 years of his professional life to SDSM& T. This medal is awarded annually to an alumnus who has achieved outstanding success in his chosen field and who demonstrates the service and spirit of Dr. March. ++ 30++ ( Note to Editor: Photograph of Lowery Smith available upon request.)
