Donna Hughes- Hargraves, United Campus Ministry, 394- 2811 PHOTOS AVAILABLE Tech students take Urban Plunge to Denver Eight South Dakota School of Mines and Technology students took an Urban Plunge to Denver recently to help folks a little less fortunate than most of us. United Campus Ministry sponsored the trip through the Urban Servant Corps, a program of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. The Tech students served lunch and helped clean up at the Denver Rescue Mission. The mission, in downtown Denver, serves meals and offers education, shelter and clothing to the homeless. The students also landscaped the grounds around Decatur House, where single parents and their children can stay while learning to become self- sufficient. The group also attended a presentation about Jubilee 2000, a movement that supports relieving the debt of poor countries around the world. Students learned what steps they could take to help achieve that goal. The Rev. Donna Hughes- Hargraves, director of United Campus Ministry, has taken groups on the Urban Plunge for the past three years. " I found that if we go away from where we live to help someone and the students see needs, they are more likely to see the problems here and they are more likely to help here, " she said. " It can be so intense, they say ‘ Oh, wow, ' and realize there is work to do in their own backyard. " We go to help out, but we go more because it changes the students, " she said. The trip wasn't all work. The group ate in an Indian restaurant and attended Sunday services at an African Methodist Episcopal Church. " Things we can't do in Rapid City, " Hughes- Hargraves said. ++ 30++ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 0700 ) |
