St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 13, 2000 100th Shuttle Mission Takes Signatures from South Dakota Friday is not only the launch date for Space Shuttle Discovery's mission STS- 92, it is also the 100th Shuttle mission. It is an important date in history because the Discovery mission will begin the heart of construction for the International Space Station. This important mission is being made with the signatures of some South Dakota school children on- board. The 100th Shuttle mission is carrying South Dakota's " Student Signatures in Space." The School of Mines & Technology Children's Science Center sent an autographed poster, as did Georgia Morse Middle School ( Pierre) and Garfield All City Elementary School ( Sioux Falls). The signatures will be returned after the mission with flight certificates and crew photos. Tom Durkin, Deputy Director/ Coordinator, South Dakota Space Grant Consortium at TECH said " This is a wonderful opportunity for students in South Dakota to get involved in space travel and with the science and engineering behind the International Space Station." Discovery will be carrying a nine- ton exterior framework and a three- ton docking port to be attached to the Space Station complex. The framework will be attached with the help of the shuttle's robotic arm. The shuttle's targeted liftoff is Friday, October 6, at 9: 11 p. m. EDT at Kennedy Space Center.
