TranscriptOffice of University Relations SDSM& T News 501 E. St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 30, 2000 Contact: Steve Buchholz, Public Information Manager, 394- 6082 John Helsdon, coach, 394- 1987 Tech soccer club posts disappointing finish The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology soccer club went winless in its first- ever regional tournament appearance. The team lost all three of its games at the National Association of Collegiate Soccer Region 1 tournament, played during the weekend in Blaine, Minn. Tech lost 5- 0 to Iowa State, 7- 2 to Moorehead State and 7- 0 to University of Minnesota Twin Cities. " Being new into the tournament format and seeing the schools that we were playing was a little bit intimidating for the players, " coach and advisor John Helsdon said. The team lost Zach Stone of Rapid City to a knee injury during the first game. He was unable to play again. That forced Helsdon to play Joergen Pedersen of Norway for long stretches even though Pedersen nursed a foot injury. Add to that hit crossbars and missed chances. " The guys didn't realize what they were getting into, " Helsdon said. " I think we learned that lesson and that will carry over to next year. We'll know what's coming and have the opportunity to adequately prepare." Before last year, the club played only in the Rapid City men's league. The club joined the Great Plains Soccer Conference in 1999, but did not advance to the regional tourney. This year, the squad finished 9- 3- 2 in conference play, good for third place. " We've made great strides, " Helsdon said. " We now understand that it's a competitive league and we are going to be anxious to compete well in our in conference next year and get back to the regionals and try to do better." For the season, freshman Brandon Silver of Rapid City led the team in scoring with 15 goals. He assisted on four others. Haavard Oxholm of Norway was second in scoring with nine goals. He led the team with six assists. Goalkeeper Jed Padilla finished with a 1.52 goals- against average. The team scored 43 goals and gave up 26, the exact opposite of last year when it scored 26 and gave up 43. ++ 30++
