TranscriptOffice of University Relations SDSM& T News 501 E. St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 26, 2000 Matt Husman, son of Mike and Marie Husman of Sheridan, Wyoming, is serving as a Resident Assistant at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology during the 2000- 2001 school year. Husman is a sophomore working toward a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Office of Residence Life at Tech provides on- campus living opportunities to more than 500 students. Promoting a spirit of unity and an atmosphere conducive to study, Resident Assistants are the foundation of the residence life system at Tech. As a Resident Assistant, Husman helps create an environment in which all students can succeed in and out of the classroom. Being a Resident Assistant provides students with many opportunities to challenge themselves while helping others do the same. Maureen " Reeny" Wilson, Assistant Director for Residence Life for Leadership, feels that a Resident Assistant position is good training for life. " Being a leader in today's business world means more than just having authority, " she said. " A leader must also possess the ability to work together in a team and solve problems through a group effort. The Residence Life department gives Resident Assistants the opportunity to experience leadership from many facets with fellow RA's, with the students on their floors, and with university staff and administration." Husman works closely with Tech's Vice President for Student Affairs and Dean of Students, Pat Mahon, a distant relative. Mahon grew up in Big Horn, near Sheridan. Mahon's sister- in- law, Nancy Husman Garber, is Matt's Aunt. Mahon's parents are Victor and Phyllis Garber. Mahon was an RA when she was in college at Eastern Montana College ( now Montana State University Billings) and she said she " certainly values the expertise and responsibilites of Resident Assistants."
