April 17, 1997 KENNECOTT AWARDS MAJOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND DEVELOPMENT GRANT TO SDSM& T Kennecott Corporation has awarded the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology $ 28, 000 scholarship package for SDSM& T students and selected Tech to receive a $ 50, 000 Program Development Grant. Steve Carlisle and Lyle Randen ( a Tech alumnus) of Kennecott will present the two checks to SDSM& T President Richard J. Gowen during a press conference at 10: 45 a. m., Thursday, April 17, in the East Bump Lounge of SDSM& T's Surbeck Center. Kennecott's $ 28, 000 scholarship award means that eight SDSM& T students -- four juniors and four seniors -- will each receive a $ 3500 scholarship for the 1997- 98 school year. The four Tech juniors named as Kennecott Scholars, with their majors and hometowns, are as follows: Angel Emerson, Geology, Dorchester, IA; Andrea Gross, Mining Engineering, Gillette, WY; Terree Short, Metallurgical Engineering, Sturgis, SD; and James Tremel, Mechanical Engineering, Casper, WY. The four seniors students, with their majors and hometowns, are as follows: Nathan Chupka, Metallurgical Engineering, Riverton, WY; Ryan Hoel, Mining Engineering, Nora Springs, IA; Bruce Larsen, Geology, Sidney, MT; and Justin Vig, Mechanical Engineering, Opal, SD. Kennecott's $ 50, 000 Program Development Grant, awarded to SDSM& T, represents one of only two in the nation, and recognizes institutions vital to Kennecott's university relations and recruiting strategy. The SDSM& T faculty, staff, and administration have already begun to leverage an additional $ 277, 500 in awards for Tech's Instructional Technology and Outreach Programs. These contributions represent a combined total of $ 327, 000 in additional program development support for SDSM& T. The funds leveraged as a result of the Kennecott Grant will upgrade Tech's Mineral, Metallurgical and Mechanical Engineering Laboratories, and enhance its High School Educational Outreach Programs. The overhaul of the laboratories will result in state- of- the- art equipment being available for undergraduate education and research. The high school outreach program will help maintain a stream of quality students attending Tech, while the Kennecott scholarships provide an incentive for students to pursue careers in the minerals industry. " We are grateful for the very generous support which Kennecott Corporation is providing to South Dakota Tech. Kennecott's decision reflects Tech's national reputation as a top- notch science and engineering institution that offers the disciplines and the type of quality graduates that Kennecott is seeking, " said SDSM& T President Gowen. It is also very gratifying to help foster talented students, who have the skills and knowledge necessary, meet the mining industry challenges of the 21st century, " said Steve Carlisle, Human Resources Manager, Kennecott's Spring Creek Coal Company. Lyle Randen, General Manager of Kennecott's Spring Creek Coal Company, will be joining Mr. Carlisle in the presentations on Thursday, April 17. Mr. Randen -- a native of Pierre, SD -- is an alumnus of South Dakota Tech, graduating in 1971 with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Mr. Randen, one of many SDSM& T graduates employed by Kennecott companies, is " thrilled to see this level of commitment from Kennecott to [ his] alma mater." Kennecott companies have supported SDSM& T for many years, with recent gifts exceeding $ 100, 000 in direct support to students and departments.
