Clipping Bureau Box 2230 Brookings, SO 57007 JAN 2 7 2000 Isabel Dakotan SITBNKB COLLEGE SCOOP It's a \ cry exciting time al ihc college wilh logs for our log house arriving, our day care facility being renovated, and best ol'all, the preparaiions I'orthe March site visit by the National College Accreditation Committee from Chicago. The spring semester has started and we have the largest enrollment ever. We have over 300 students en rolled. The campus al Luke Gilbert building is almost complete with the library being open seven days a week. Additional classrooms in the trailer and in the very near future the book store will also be in the Luke Gilbert Building and w ill pro\ idc expanded sen ices. That's a lot to say in one paragraph. Is a summer semesier possible? Maybe. There w ill be workshops and training conducted during the summer. Some of these will be in the-Held of computers, criminal justice, agriculture. GPS/G1S, and more. The Voc-Ed department is also expanding. We are looking at adding auto mechanics and elding in the future. The college will also be pro\ iding bus service for the Eagle Butie students i n the near future and if all goes to plan we will be providing classes in the outlying communities via computer and television in the fall semester. A Si Tanka College video is being produced and can be seen on cable channel 8. This video will introduce _jpou to Ihc staff and faculty of the By Tommy Harper college and give you a view inside the college campus. It will also show our Voc-Ed students at work. On Mondays (2:00p.m.) and Wednesday (7:00 p.m. with a rcbroadcast of Mondays show) you can catch up on the college scoop on radio station KLND, LilUe Eagle, South Dakota. The Voc-Ed students are getting hands on experience for the first lime ever at the college. They are working not only on the college building but on prh ale and Tribal projects as well. They are learning to use the heavy equipment that was bought through a Voc-Ed Grant and upon the completion ol Iheir program, they should have no problem obtaining their state license. The college now has agreements wilh School of Mines, SPSU. Sinte Gleska. NSU, OLC, Auburn Uni\ cr-sity in Alabama, andareciosctougree-meni with the United Staled Marine_. Corps, and the United Slates AirForce. Classes I'or Ihe Criminal Justice Program have started with 20 police work officers from ihe Tribal Police Department enrolled in English (Report Writing). Workshops are in the works I'or this summer as well. Some ol the other Tribal Departments have already taken advantage of ihc college's ability to produce work shops 10 lit Iheir needs. �if
