St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( April 21, 1997) SDSM& T STUDENT FROM CASPER NAMED KENNECOTT SCHOLAR James Tremel of Casper, who is a student at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, has been named a recipient of the Kennecott Scholarship. He will receive a $ 3500 scholarship for the 1997- 1998 school year. In addition to the scholarship, Tremel has been selected for a paid internship this summer with Kennecott's Utah Copper Power Plant in Salt Lake City, Utah. James is currently completing his sophomore year as a Mining Engineering major. He is the son of Joseph and Mary Ann Tremel of Casper. Lyle Randen, General Manager of Kennecott's Spring Creek Coal Company, and Steve Carlisle, Human Resources Manager of Kennecott's Spring Creek Coal Company, announced Tremel's selection as a Kennecott Scholar during a recent awards luncheon on the South Dakota Tech campus in Rapid City. Lyle Randen, a 1971 Chemical Engineering graduate from South Dakota Tech, is one of many SDSM& T graduates employed by Kennecott companies. " We are grateful for the very generous support which Kennecott Corporation is providing to South Dakota Tech. Kennecott's decision reflects Tech's national reputation as a top- notch science and engineering institution that offers the disciplines and the type of quality graduates that Kennecott is seeking, " said SDSM& T President Gowen. " Our partnership with Kennecott will mark a new level of educational excellence for South Dakota Tech. James Tremel is to be congratulated on receiving this scholarship.
