TranscriptBrookings, SD 57006 Ipswich Tribune Chess championship set for Rapid City March 20 Nearly 200 students from around the state are expected to square off over black and white chess boards on Saturday, March 20 as the South Dakota Chess Association brings the state scholastic championships to Rapid City for the second time in three years. The all-day tournament will be held in the newly-remodeled Surbeck Center at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Promising fun and mental challenges for all, the annual South Dakota Scholastic Chess Championships is open to students in grades K-12, from novice players to experts, who live in or attend school in South Dakota. All students play five games. No one will be eliminated. Trophies will be awarded to the top five finishers in six divisions: Primary [K-3); Beginning Elementary (K-5, rated under 400 by US Chess Federation); Elementary Open (K-5); Novice Middle School (K-8. rated under 600 by US Chess Federation), Open Middle School (K-8); and High School (K-12). Team trophies to the top three schools in each division. The tournament is sanctioned by the US Chess Federation and sponsored by the South Dakota) Chess Association and the South] Dakota School of Mines &| Technology.
