TitleLocal resident inducted into Order of Engineer
TranscriptMAR 2 2 2001 Ipswich Tribune 7 Local resident inducted into Order of Engineer The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology recently inducted John McDowell of Mina into the Order of the Engineer. McDowell is a senior majoring in Chemical Engineering. The purpose of the "Order of the Engineer" organization is "to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the profession, to bridge the gap between training and practice, and to present the public with a visible symbol identifying the engineer." Patterned after the "Canadian Call of the Engineer", the Order of the Engineer organization was incorporated in the United States in 1972. Members are asked to pledge themselves to the ethical practice of engineering as described in the "Obligation of an Engineer." In the initiation ceremony, inductees received a certificate embodying the Obligation and a stainless steel ring to be worn on the fifth finger of the working hand. Inductees are encouraged to display the signed Obligation certificate and to wear the ring as visible reminders of the publicly accepted Obligation. The 2001 initiation into the Order of the Engineer was held on Feb. 22, 2001, at the University in Rapid City, S.D. The Initiation was held during National Engineers Week.
