St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( October 6, 1997) SDSM& T PROFESSOR RECEIVES SOUTH DAKOTA BOARD OF REGENTS AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN RESEARCH Dr. Jon J. Kellar, Associate Professor of Metallurgical Engineering at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, has been selected as recipient of the South Dakota Board of Regents Award for Excellence in Research. The award was established this year by the Board of Regents to recognize faculty excellence in research. Board of Regents Executive Director Dr. Robert T. Tad Perry presented the award to Dr. Kellar during the recent South Dakota EPSCoR ( Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research) Annual Conference. The South Dakota State Board of Regents have established two such annual awards to recognize excellence in research contributions by South Dakota university faculty. One award is earmarked for recognizing the scientific contributions of researchers early in their careers and the other award honors senior faculty members for research accomplishments. Dr. Kellar's research involves bonding between fibers and matrix material in composite materials. His research specialty is in the development of new materials, with an emphasis on how the molecular structure affects properties such as strength and durability. Dr. Kellar has served on the SDSM& T faculty since 1990. He received his undergraduate and master's degrees from SDSM& T and his Ph. D. from the University of Utah. In 1994 Dr. Kellar received the prestigious designation as a National Science Foundation Presidential Faculty Fellow. He has been an invited participant in the National Academy of Engineering conference, " Frontiers in Engineering, " and is currently organizing an international conference on surface characterization. " The research being conducted by Dr. Kellar and his colleagues offers tremendous potential for economic development in South Dakota, " said Dr. Richard J. Gowen, SDSM& T President. " Their excellence in scientific research and academic leadership are building on our traditions of excellence to help ensure that our graduates have the knowledge and skills necessary to compete in the 21st century. I commend the Board of Regents for establishing these awards to recognize the important research contributions by faculty in our state." The established career award was presented to Dr. Donald P. Evenson, distinguished professor of chemistry at South Dakota State University. Selection of award recipients was based on evidence of outstanding scholarship in published works, successful grant activity, invited participation in national or international forums, recognition by professional societies, and assistance in helping other South Dakotans find opportunities for research. ++ 30++ ( f:\ programs\ dept\ univrel\ pressrele\ 1097\ Kellar BOR Research Award fax/ stwd)
