| Transcript | Tech Students Score High on Junior Proficiency Exams South Dakota Tech students scored very high on both of the rising junior proficiency exams compared to the mean test scores on both a national and statewide basis. The rising junior proficiency exams taken last spring were comprised of two tests— the Collegiate Assessment of Academic Proficiency ( CAAP) and the Academic Profile ( AP). 153 South Dakota Tech students, 92% of those eligible for junior standing, took the exams. SDSM& T students achieved the top scores of the South Dakota institutions in three of the four test categories on the CAAP exam— Mathematics, Reading and Science Reasoning. SDSM& T's mean test score was higher than the national mean in all four categories, and significantly higher in the mathematics, reading and science reasoning categories. In the Writing Skills category, Tech students ranked second among the South Dakota institutions. ( see chart) An analysis of the CAAP Institutional Test Sub- Score Summary also underscores the accomplishments of SDSM& T students compared to the national mean and the South Dakota institutions range of means. Tech students had the highest mean test sub- score of South Dakota institutions in the Mathematics: Algebra; Reading: Arts/ Literature; and Reading: Social Science categories. Every Tech student taking the test performed at least at the Level 1 proficiency in math, with 96% performing at Level 1, 89% at Level 2 and 52% at Level 3 ( highest level). Only 1% of Tech students did not reach the Level 1 proficiency in reading/ critical thinking, with 93% performing at Level 1, 75% at Level 2 and 23% at Level 3. In the writing category, 84% reached at least the Level 1 proficiency, with 40% achieving Level 2 and 8% Level 3. SDSM& T students had the highest mean test score of all six South Dakota institutions in all three categories of the Academic Profile ( AP) examination – Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. ( see chart) In the AP Skills Dimension Subscores, Tech students had the highest mean in three of the four categories— College Level Reading, Critical Thinking, and Using Mathematical Data. The fourth category, College Level Writing, showed SDSM& T with a mean of 117, midway in the 116- 118 range of means for South Dakota institutions. ��� Our students at South Dakota Tech are to be commended for how well they did on these exams, " said Dr. Karen Whitehead, Vice President for Academic Affairs.
