Clipping Bureau Box 2230 Brookings, SD 57007 SEP 1 * 1995 , ' Doland Times- SDSMAT Coach To Be Inducted Into NSU's Athletic Hall of Fame South Dakota School or Mines and Technology's Barb Felderman will be the founh woman to be inducted into Northern State Lfnivesiiys ( NSLJ ) Athletic Hall of Fame during Gypsy Day festivities September 29 - 3O. She becomes the first NSU female athlete selected for the honor. Felderman is presently chair and professor of physical education, assistant director of intercollegiate athletics and head women's basketball coach at Tech. At NSU. she was a member of the first NSU women's basketball team in 1970 and lettered in basketball, track, field hockey and volley ball. Receiving a bachelor's degree in health and physical education in 1973, she went on to earn a master's degree from the University of Wyoming. For eight years, she coached irack, volleybnll and gymnastics at fKndoka and Pierre high schools. Feldermnn also coached soflhall at Ball Stale Universiiy in Indiana. She became the firsi woman to coach ai Tech in 1981. Since then, Felderman has coached seven South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference ( SDTC ) volleyhall championship teams, including five in a row from 1984 - 1988. The state sport.swriters named Tech's volleyball team the "College Team of the Year" in 1987. "" In addition, her Lady Hardrocker basketball teams have won three SDIC titles. The state sporuswriters also selected -t Felderman as the "College Coach of the Year" in 1991. In 1993 she became the first female to receive the NSU Royal q, Order of the Gyps Alumni Coach -<J of the Year award. Felderman has been named SDIC Volleyball Coach of the Year six times and SDIC Basketball Coach of the Year three tim, es. She is a member of the Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame and the South Dakota Softball Association Hall of Fame. Felderman, says that she is very honored by this recent recognition. "When I went to school;, scholarships were not available for women athletes. We played for the love of the game. This is a real honor to be recognized 'for the hard work put in over the years, " said Felderman. Barb is the daughter of Merle and Donna Felderman of rural Doland. |
