S. research universities to more than 100. Internet2 is developing advanced network applications that will be better served by gigaPoPs capable of providing scalable high- speed connection points for universities. Internet2 participants also plan to broaden their research and development expenditures to help create these gigaPoPs. Member universities, working with private member companies and non- profit organizations, are developing tools for scientific research and higher education in the 21st century. The Internet2 homepage is located at http:// www. internet2. edu. Affiliate Members of I2 are non- profit organizations that share the interests of the university community in promoting the development and use of advanced Internet applications and network services. The largest part of the Internet2 team is the people at the over 100 member universities who are developing the advanced network applications and engineering that form the foundation of Internet2' s mission and goals. They are working with organizations that have joined the Internet2 effort as corporate partners and affiliate members. Applications and engineering working groups have been formed to address specific areas of Internet2. In addition, a central staff is working to facilitate Internet2 activities. This staff receives guidance from the Internet2/ UCAID Board of Trustees. UCAID supports Internet2 activities as they continue to develop various broadband applications as well as engineering and network management tools for next generation Internet use in research and education. Academic Leaders Establish New Nationwide Networking Organization. Leading U. S. research universities have established the University Corporation for Advanced Internet Development ( UCAID) in the to support the development of broadband applications, engineering and network management tools for next generation Internet use in research and education.
