St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( July 18, 1997) BILL HUGHES TO RECEIVE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD FROM NATIONAL SOCIETY OF PROFESSIONAL ENGINEERS Former SDSM& T Vice President Bill Hughes of Rapid City will receive the National Society of Professional Engineers ( NSPE) Distinguished Service Award during the NSPE Annual Convention Recognition Banquet in Rapid City this Sunday, July 20th. The banquet will begin at 7: 00 p. m. in the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. About 1000 engineers from across the nation are attending the NSPE Annual Convention being held in Rapid City July 17- 22. The NSPE Distinguished Service Award is given to recognize eminence attained by technical contributions to the field of engineering and outstanding contributions to NSPE and the engineering profession. Bill Hughes, who was 1995 South Dakota Engineering Society Engineer of the Year, has distinguished himself as an engineer, as an educator and as a person. Hughes served as Vice President and Dean of Engineering of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology from 1988 to 1993. As SDSM& T Vice President, he championed the development of several new and innovative programs, including one in Technology Management. Hughes currently is national co- chairman of SDSM& T's first ever capital campaign Vision 2000- Leadership for the Next Century. He has been an active member of the SDSM& T Foundation, serving as a Foundation Trustee, a Board of Directors member, and on the Board Executive Committee. Prior to joining the South Dakota Tech faculty, he was a professor of electrical engineering at Oklahoma State University and Iowa State University. He is the co- author of two widely used electrical engineering textbooks. In the engineering profession, Hughes pioneered the development of special color television systems. He has done consulting work on a worldwide basis and is the recognized expert on inductive heating of large pipes for oil pipelines. In addition, he has provided leadership in planning utilities, telecommunications and pipeline systems in several developing countries in the Middle and Far East. Hughes has been a pioneer in the development of a novel windmill commonly known as the " bicycle wheel windmill." He has received fourteen patents, has been a contributing author to five engineering handbooks, and has authored approximately fifty technical papers over the past thirty years. He also is founder and president of InEn Corporation, a developer and manufacturer of specialty high technology electronic and electrical equipment, primarily for pipeline and oil industries. He has designed, built, installed, and trained operators for induction heating -- more-- - 2- equipment for plants in Saudi Arabia, Australia, South Africa, England, Scotland and many locations in the United States. The company also has developed specialty equipment utilizing renewable energy in the solar, wind and biomass areas. Hughes has been an active member of many professional organizations over the years. The numerous honors he has received include: Guy E.
