St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( August 16, 2000) LOCAL NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR PARTICIPATES IN " TECHNOLOGY FOR TEACHING AND LEARNING" PROGRAM AT SDSM& T Carol Skillman of Sioux Falls participated in the Technology for Teaching and Learning Network Administrators ( TTL- NA) program this summer at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology ( SDSM& T). Skillman, who is employed by the Sioux Falls School District, was one of 42 teachers and school administrators who attended the second TTL session at SDSM& T this year. TIE ( Technology and Innovations in Education) has been involved in developing the TTL- NA concept, and coordinating funding for the program with the state. Each summer hundreds of K- 12 teachers and personnel attend TTL Academies. The workshops were created to meet a growing need for technical expertise in the schools. Participants are given more than 200 hours of extensive technology training during the workshops. The curriculum at SDSM& T for the summer workshops was constructed to directly address the professional development needs of the K- 12 network/ computing administrators. The network administrators were consulted, and several worked directly with SDSM& T in selecting topics, plus designing and delivering curriculum components. After last year's TTL- NA sessions, K- 12 network administrators formed several groups that meet at locations around the state. Representatives from SDSM& T were present at a number of these meetings to seek input on topic selection for future sessions. The training that the participants received will help to ensure that schools maximize the use of high- end servers, Ethernet switches, and other network components. Participants also learned how to maintain effective networks. SDSM& T worked closely with the state Bureau of Information and Telecommunications ( BIT) to bring in topics that would be useful to the network administrators. BIT supplies connectivity to many of the schools, and has coordinated the Wiring the Schools and Connecting the Schools programs. In partnership with USWest, they are developing a new network called the Digital Dakota Network to provide enhanced connectivity to the schools " TTL- NA 2000 brought together K- 12 network administrators, instructors, and guest speakers at SDSM& T for an incredible professional development experience, " said Katherine McCarville, Director of Instructional Technology Services at SDSM& T. " The unique blend of high- level support for the program in the state and on the campus, combined with curricular guidance from computer scientists, experience from practicing computing and networking professionals, and excellent logistics, sent the participants home with new skills, deeper understanding and access to a network of other professionals that they can consult with on situations or problems, " McCarville continued. " They'll be working smarter, not harder, when they get back to their schools and districts." South Dakota's Technology for Teaching and Learning program is the first effort by any state in the country to connect K- 12 education and provide extensive training to teachers, administrators, and superintendents in school districts across the state. " South Dakota is now well positioned to be a leading state regarding education, " remarked Dr. Richard Gowen, President of SDSM& T. " The wiring project recently completed in the schools, together with the Technology for Teaching and Learning programs put us in a unique position to incorporate technology and education." " We will continue to work on enhancing individual education and connecting the schools in ways so that we can continue to grow, " Gowen added. ++ 30++ Photo Caption: Carol Skillman is congratulated by Dr. Richard Gowen, President of SDSM& T, for her participation in the Technology for Teaching and Learning training program for network administrators.
