St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 4, 2000 RESULTS OF STUDENT REU RESEARCH PRESENTED IN POSTER SESSION AT SDSM& T FRIDAY, JULY 28 The Research for Undergraduates program ( REU) wound up on Friday, July 28 with a Poster Session in the Surbeck Center. The seven students presented the results of their assigned research projects to interested students, professors, and the public. The REU program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, aims to expand student participation in all types of research, and is open to undergraduate students. The program allows students to experience first- hand how basic research is carried out. While the group of students participating in this summer's two- month program at SDSM& T came from universities around the nation, several were SDSM& T students. " The REU program gave me the chance to try something completely different. It was a great experience. The professors were extremely helpful, " commented Debbie Morgan, a SDSM& T Chemistry student " The program didn't just teach me about research, but about documentation, communication and presentation. It was a very well rounded experience. It was great to start the project from scratch, watch it develop and then see the finished product." Ryan Caldwell, also a SDSM& T student added " I think the most valuable part of the program was learning problem- solving skills. The communication skills we learned will also be valuable regardless of whether or not I decide to go into research." One of the special features of this program is the emphasis on faculty- student mentoring, developing the research and communication skills of the participants. " The REU/ AMP undergraduate researchers are given the opportunity to work side- by- side with faculty mentors and graduate students gaining invaluable research experience in their field of study, " said Robb Winter, Professor of Chemical Engineering. " The entire REU/ AMP experience is designed to help the students gain a greater perspective into their career choice and the research enterprise." " The primary focus of our REU site is to provide an opportunity to Chemical Engineering students from across the country and opportunity to experience first- hand the excitement of performing research. Dr. Sneller guides the participants in developing their communications skills which is another important aspect of our program." " This year students came from MIT, Washington State, and Oglala Lakota College as well as SDSM& T. Not only did this group excel in our research labs but they developed strong ties among themselves during soccer, basketball, picnics and other social events. I hope these ties last for years to come." ++ 30++ udy Sneller, whose role in the the REU program is to work with students on communication skills commented " It is really wonderful to see the students' excitement about actually DOING research, putting their textbook knowledge to the test, as it were. It's also exciting for me, as an English professor, to see the students take their communication skills so seriously and use this REU summer as a chance to practice writing, speaking, reading, researching, and designing documents." The various projects the students worked on this year focused on " Molecular Level Modification of Surfaces".
