On Thursday, September 14, the Commission will focus on " The Promise of the Internet for Learning: Voices from the Field." South Dakota Governor William Janklow, Federal Communications Commission Chairman William Kennard, former Education Secretary William Bennett, and Washington, D. C. Mayor Anthony Williams will testify along with other prominent leaders from the world of government, education, and business. Panels of witnesses will speak to the issues of state and local policy, a federal research agenda for technology and learning, the special needs of rural populations, and privacy and protection for children using the Internet. On Friday, September 15, the Commission will consider " The Promise of the Internet to Empower Adult Learners." Education publishers, representatives of recent commissions that are studying online training issues, noted practitioners, and experts in new and emerging business models will provide testimony. The Commission, chaired by Senator Bob Kerrey ( D- NE), with Rep. Johnny Isakson ( R- GA) serving as vice chair, is developing policy recommendations to ensure that all learners can take full advantage of the educational promise of the World Wide Web. The Commission will report its findings and recommendations to the President and Congress in November. Witnesses and commissioners will be available to the media prior to and immediately after the hearing on both days. Appointed by President Clinton, Secretary of Education Richard Riley, and congressional leaders, the sixteen commissioners include members of Congress and representatives of the education, technology, and business sectors.
