St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE September 18, 2000 SDSM& T CAREER FAIR TO FEATURE RECORD BREAKING NUMBER OF EMPLOYERS Record attendance is expected at the SDSM& T Career Fair this fall – more than 80 companies and agencies from 24 states are scheduled to recruit South Dakota Tech students for full- time, summer, and cooperative education positions. SDSM& T's Engineering & Science Career Fair will be held Tuesday, September 19, 2000 from 9: 00 a. m. – noon and 1: 00 p. m. - 4: 00 p. m. in the Surbeck Student Center This year's SDSM& T Career Fair will be the largest recruiting event ever held on campus, surpassing the record number of 63 employers that attended the 1999 event. The 30% increase in participating employers illustrates the strong job outlook for engineering and science degrees. South Dakota employers participating in this year's fair include Communiq, Daktronics, Horton, IBP, Innovative Systems, Kolberg- Pioneer, Martin & Associates, Midcom, Raytheon- EROS Data Center, Sencore, South Dakota DOT, South Dakota DENR, and US Geological Survey. Other employers signed up to attend this year's fair include Microsoft, Boeing, Cargill, Caterpillar, Dow Chemical, Hewlett Packard, Kiewit, Michelin, Nortel, Raytheon, Rockwell, Schlumberger, 3M, and UPS. According to Darrell Sawyer, SDSM& T Director of Career Planning, Placement and Cooperative Education �� This event provides our students an excellent opportunity to discuss career opportunities and network with a very impressive group of employers. More than twenty Fortune 500 companies, many first- time exhibitors, and Departments of Transportation from five states are participating this year. These companies and agencies recognize the quality of South Dakota Tech graduates and the top- notch education they receive". The placement and starting salaries of last year's SDSM& T graduates demonstrate strong demand for engineers and scientists. By the time they graduated last year, a majority of South Dakota Tech students had accepted jobs in their career fields, including some who had several job offers. Within three months of graduation, 90% of SDSM& T students are working in their career fields or pursuing graduate/ professional degrees. Starting salaries averaged more than $ 43, 000 for last year's South Dakota Tech graduates overall, with averages more than $ 42, 500 for engineering majors and $ 45, 800 for science degrees. Computer science majors received starting salary offers averaging more than $ 48, 500.
