TranscriptOffice of University Relations SDSM& T News 501 E. St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 13, 2000 Tech Again Named as One of America's 100 Best College Buys The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology was the only higher education institution in South Dakota to be named on the list of America's 100 Best College Buys. Tech also had the distinction of being the least expensive of the five science and engineering institutions that made the list. This was the 10th annual list published by Institutional Research & Evaluation, Inc., an independent research and consulting organization that specializes in the recruiting and retention of students for institutions of higher education. Each year they identify the 100 American colleges and universities that provide students the very highest quality education at the lowest cost. They send surveys to each institution that meets the criteria and then make a selection from those. This year 1, 219 schools responded to the survey. The criteria that must be met in order to be considered for the designation of America's 100 Best College Buys are as follows: 1) Be an accredited, four- year institution offering bachelor's degrees. 2) Offer full residential facilities including residence halls and dining services. 3) Have had an entering freshman class in the fall of 1999 with a high school grade point average and/ or SAT/ ACT score equal to or above the national average for entering college freshmen. 4) Have an out- of- state cost of attendance in 2000- 2001 for three- quarters or two semesters below the national average cost of attendance or not exceeding the national average cost by more than ten percent. The survey also reported average costs of attendance, which were based upon the costs at a private institution and the out- of- state costs at a public institution. The average costs for 2000- 2001 were $ 17, 865. Tech costs are $ 7, 190 for in- state and $ 11, 406 for out- of- state. Survey results showed that the average national ACT score for entering college freshmen was 23, the SAT average was 1095, and the average high school grade point average was 3.24. Entering college freshman at Tech were above the national average with an ACT average score of 24, SAT average of 1113 and a GPA average of 3.44. ++ 30++ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 2000 10/ Best Buy)
