Twenty Years of Sturgis by Michael Lichter is a photographic essay and historical documentation of what we in the Black Hills consider, the premier motorcycle rally in the U. S. Lichter's photographs will take you back in time to the late 1970' s, and up to date with a selection of black and white and color photographs that explore the machines and personalities that make the rally so dynamic. On view until August 28. In conjunction with Twenty Years of Sturgis, Mottomechanicals, an exhibition of sculptures by Greg Vettel will complete the exhibition. Vettel uses Harley Davidson parts to create totemic sculptures that emphasize the inner workings of the motorcycle. Inspired by his love of motorcycles and his work as an internal combustion technician Vettel creates pieces that explore movement on several levels. By using the vital parts of the engine to create sculptures, a number of which move, Vettle asks us to consider the hidden beauty of the machine. He conveys his aesthetic sense in the balance between the sharp angular forms, the high contrast features and the textures of the unpainted, rough, worn steel. Mottomechanicals will be on display through August 24.
