Thanks to the coordination by Congressman John Thune, the Children's Science Center will host NASA's Mobile Aeronautics Education Laboratory ( MAEL) June 19- 23, 2000. MAEL is a mobile, state- of- the- art classroom that uses new technologies to excite students in grades 5 and up about science and mathematics. In ten unique workstations, visitors can explore these technologies through " hands- on/ minds- on" activities that model real- world challenges in aviation. An aeronautic theme ties the station together as participants gather essential data necessary for the completion of a cross- country flight from Washington D. C. to San Francisco via the four NASA Aeronautics Research Centers. One of the primary goals of the MAEL is to motivate students to consider careers in technology, engineering and science. The MAEL also provides educational programs that engage students in the problem- solving skills required for math and science, and provides an example to educators of how they might use the technology in their classrooms. On- site activities offer a variety of learning experiences to provide maximum accessibility for students with diverse interests and abilities. Post visit and evaluation activities complete the experience for students and teachers. MAEL workstation activities include: a • Virtual Reality • Weather • GPS/ Amateur Radio • Internet/ World Wide Web • Aircraft Design • Aeronautics Interactive • Activity Center • Wind Tunnell • Remote Sensing, and • Resource Center a On Tuesday, June 20 through Friday, June 23 classrooms and student groups will be scheduled ahead of time to participate in hour- long activities at the MAEL.
