St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( June 17, 1997) STURGIS AREA STUDENTS MEMBERS OF SDSM& T SOLAR MOTION TEAM Students from the Sturgis are members of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Solar Motion team which have qualified to compete in Sunrayce ' 97. Sturgis area team members include Ken Harding, Newell; Loren Thomson, Sturgis; Cheyenne Vig, Mud Butte; Paul Winkler, Newell. Cheyenne is the daughter of Dwayne and Zona Vig of Mud Butte and is the Media/ Public Relations Manager for the Solar Motion team. She recently graduated from SDSM& T with a Bachelor Science degree in Interdisciplinary Sciences. Paul Winkler, a graduate student in Technology Management at SDSM& T, is the son of David and Beverly Winkler, Newell. He is the crew chief for South Dakota Tech's car. Ken, a mechanical engineering major at SDSM& T, is the son of Keith and Chris Harding, Garden City. Loren Thomson is a graduate student in Technology Management at SDSM& T. SDSM& T's car, named Dakota Sun, is one of 36 solar- powered vehicles which qualified to enter the biennial intercollegiate competition. SDSM& T is the only university in an 11- state region ( Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington and Wyoming) to enter a vehicle in Sunrayce ' 97. South Dakota Tech will be competing against many larger universities, some of whose enrollments are 10 or 15 times higher -- such as UCLA, University of Minnesota, Purdue, and Virginia Tech. Sunrayce ' 97 starts Thursday, June 19, in Indianapolis and will finish ten days later in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The race is sponsored by General Motors, Electronics Data Systems, and the Department of Energy. Dakota Sun will begin the long- distance race of solar- powered vehicles across America's heartland in the 32nd position. SDSM& T's Solar Motion team has its own web site and will be updating the web site throughout Sunrayce ' 97 with race developments and photos as they occur.
