St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 30, 2000 CHILDREN'S SCIENCE CENTER MAY & JUNE CALENDAR OF EVENTS Saturday, May 13, 1: 00 to 4: 00 PM Stamps Away, the Post Office's Civilian Advisory Committee will present continuous programming on stamps, stamp collecting, and a chance to use a special pictorial post mark the Post Office made just for the Children's Science Center. Rapid City's Postmaster Dan Doran will also be at the Center. Special postcards will also be in the gift store. Sunday, May 14, 1: 00 to 4: 00 PM To mark Mother's Day and the start of National Historic Preservation Week the Center will present Discover South Dakota with Treasures from Grandma's Attic. There will be a demonstration of the Historic Rapid City project by student historians from Rapid Valley Elementary. The Center will also have information on the renovations to the Center's own historic structure. The students will be doing continuous demonstrations from 1: 00 to 3: 00 PM. The demonstrations will include computer programs that the visitors can try called Timeliner, Neighborhood Map Machine, and Community Construction Kit that show the development of the Rapid City Downtown Historic District. There will be a presentation at 2: 00 PM on the Science Center's building's history and future plans. At 3: 00 PM Rhonda Buell Schier, granddaughter of Rapid City pioneers, Charles and Maud Buell, will take you for a trip into local history with treasures from the 1889 Buell House. Ms. Schier will engage your interest, intellect and imagination with primary source documents and historic artifacts. Learn about people, places and politics through photographs, letters and newspaper stories. As a curriculum writer and piloting teacher of the telecollaborative project, Discover South Dakota, Rhonda shows how these " whatchamacallits", " whochamacallits���, and " wherechamacallits" bring history alive in ways textbooks cannot. Learn how to infuse history with electronic tools such as Timeliner, Neighborhood Map Machine, and Community Construction Kit The Children's Science Center will be free for this event! - more - - Page 2 - Saturday May 20 1: 00 to 3: 00 PM Volunteer training, do you want to help the Children's Science? Please join us on May 20th for volunteer training. The Center needs help with assisting visitors, programs, and exhibit construction. This program will be a general introduction to volunteering at the Center. Please call 394- 6996 to let us know you are coming ahead of time so we have enough materials. Saturday, May 27 11: 30 AM & 1: 30 PM Ferret Fair; join Ms. Michelle Winchester and her family of ferrets. Meet Bilbo Baggins, Bela Lagosi, Silver, and Witch and enjoy their antics. Ms. Winchester will be presenting her program at 11: 30 AM and again at 1: 30 PM. Thursday, June 1, 10: 00 AM to 7: 00 PM The Summer Program Registration, the Center will be open until 7: 00 PM to take summer program registration. Please look in the newsletter for a disruption of the classes we are offering for children this summer. Saturday, June 3 10: 00 AM to 3: 00 Bubble Festival; join us again for our summer bubble festival. There will be big bubbles, little bubbles, colored bubbles and odd shaped bubbles. We will be downing the bubble festival out behind the Center in Halley Park. An adult must accompany children 12 and younger. You can also use this opportunity to register for summer programs. Monday, June 5, 9: 00 to Noon (@ Rapid City Public Library) There will be continuous StarLab shows to help the library kick- off their summer reading program. Information will also be available on the Center's summer programs. With the exception of the May 14th program these programs are free with admission to the Science Center.
