St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 24, 2000 TWO IRENE GRADUATES RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIP FROM SDSM& T Matthew Sletten and David Steffen, both seniors attending Irene High School, have been awarded a scholarship for the 2000- 2001 academic year from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T). Both students will be attending SD Tech beginning the fall 2000 semester. Sletten, who was awarded a $ 1, 000 scholarship, will be working toward a degree in civil and environmental engineering. Steffen, who received a $ 3, 000 scholarship, will be working toward a computer science degree. On Friday, May 12, both students will receive a certificate during Irene High School's annual honors program in recognition of the scholarship. As one of the leading engineering, science and computer technology institutions in the country, South Dakota School of Mines & Technology has been preparing world- class engineers and scientists for more than a century. The School of Mines offers ten engineering and six science programs. The engineering programs include chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, geological, industrial, mechanical, metallurgical and mining. The science programs, including chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics, physics and interdisciplinary science, complete the undergraduate program. The Graduate School offers ten Master of Science degree programs. These include atmospheric sciences, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, geology and geological engineering, materials engineering and science, mechanical engineering, paleontology and technology management. Doctoral degrees are offered in atmospheric, environmental, and water resources; geology and geological engineering; and materials engineering and science. Each year more than 100 companies visit the Tech campus to employ its graduates and to offer attractive co- operative ( co- op) and internship opportunities to juniors and seniors. Approximately 76 percent of each year's senior class participate in co- op/ internship programs. Last fall the annual career fair attracted more than 1, 000 students who visited with over 60 company representatives. Rapid City is the second largest city in South Dakota, with a population of more than 60, 000. It is the hub of commerce for western South Dakota, eastern Wyoming, and northwestern Nebraska. Twenty minutes from Mount Rushmore, Rapid City and the adjacent Black Hills National Forest, offer summer and winter recreational activities that include hiking, biking, skiing, snowboarding, camping, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and mountain climbing.
