St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 26, 2000 IRENE NATIVE WINS SDSM& T CONCRETE CANOE COMPETITION AND EARNS INVITATION TO NATIONAL COMPETITION The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology took first place overall at the 2000 American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE) Rocky Mountain Region Concrete Canoe Competition held at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah April 7- 8, 2000, with their canoe named " Looking Glass." The first place finish marks Tech's eleventh time out of the past thirteen years that a student team from SDSM& T has won first place at a regional competition. Josh Sletten, a junior at SDSM& T and native of Irene, contributed to the championship. Sletten, who is working toward a degree in civil and environmental engineering, is co- chair of the Steel Bridge team. By winning the regional concrete canoe contest, SDSM& T has earned the right to compete in the National Concrete Canoe Competition, held June 24- 26, 2000, at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden, Colorado. The thirteenth annual ASCE/ MBT National Concrete Canoe Competition is sponsored by the ASCE and Master Builders, Inc. More than twenty teams, winners and qualifying second- place finishers of regional races held throughout the country will be invited to attend the 2000 national competition. Brigham Young University hosted the weekend regional competition. Tech won first place in the competition after winning most points overall from Friday's and Saturday's events. The team placed as follows: first canoe; third in finished product; first women's sprint; first women's endurance; first co- ed; first paper presentation; first canoe paper; first canoe display; first bridge stiffness; first technical paper; and first in pre- design with concrete bowling ball. ++ 30++ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 0400 Concrete canoe Irene) |
