St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 28, 2000 TWO LOCAL STUDENTS SERVE AS RESIDENT ASSISTANTS AT SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES & TECHNOLOGY BJ Misterek and Brent Peterson, both of Sioux Falls, have served as Resident Assistants in Connolly Hall at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology during the 1999- 2000 school year. Both students were on the team that won the Outstanding Team Program award for organizing the first annual J. P. Connolly Games. Misterek is a junior at Tech, working toward a computer science degree. Peterson, also a junior at Tech, is working toward a degree in civil and environmental engineering. The Department of Residence Life at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology provides on- campus living opportunities to almost 500 students. Promoting a spirit of unity and an atmosphere conducive to study, Resident Assistants are the foundation of the residence life system at Tech. As Resident Assistants, Misterek and Peterson help create an environment in which all students can succeed in and out of the classroom. Being a Resident Assistant provides individuals with many opportunities to challenge themselves while helping others do the same. Maureen " Reeny" Wilson, Assistant Director for Residence Life for Leadership and Connolly Hall Director, feels that a Resident Assistant position is good training for life. " Being a leader in today's business world means more than just having authority, " she said. " A leader must also possess the ability to work together in a team and solve problems through a group effort.
