St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: ( July 7, 1997) SDSM& T MUSEUM OF GEOLOGY TO CONDUCT SECOND SUMMER FIELD DIG FOR JURASSIC DINOSAURS AND OTHER FOSSILS NEAR SUNDANCE The SDSM& T Museum of Geology will conduct a second summer session of excavating for Jurassic Dinosaurs and primitive mammals at a field site near Sundance, Wyoming, to continue its current scientific work at the site. Dr. James Martin, Curator of Vertebrate Paleontology for the SDSM& T Museum of Geology, who is leading the current field session that began June 30th, also will oversee the second scientific session from July 14- 26 in which the public can participate on a limited, space- available basis. Professor Martin is leading the scientific excavation for Camarasaurus and Allosaurus, as well as tiny primitive mammals, at this important paleontological site. The excavations this summer are focusing on the neck and skull of Camarasaurus, whose skeleton SDSM& T scientists have been excavating the past four years. Dr. Martin and his associates are continuing to excavate along the neck of the skeleton, hoping to find a skull at the end of this dinosaur's " fishing pole" neck. At this site near Sundance, SDSM& T paleontologists have discovered the jaw of a very primitive mammal unlike any which has been previously found. They also are looking for more Stegosaurus and a number of small carnivorous dinosaurs, as well as Diplodocus, Barosaurus, and Brontosaurus. The paleontogical digs are sponsored by the Dinosaur Society and the SDSM& T Museum of Geology. Space for public participation is limited. Participants will be in small groups working closely with the involved scientists. Participation also may be taken for academic credit. To register for this field paleontology session or obtain additional information, individuals should contact Dr. Philip Bjork, SDSM& T Museum of Geology, at 1- 800- 544- 8162, ext. 2467, or e- mail ( pbjork@ msmailgw. sdsmt. edu). ++ 30++ ( Editor: If you are interested in doing an on- site story, call Darrell Sawyer, SDSM& T Public Information Manager, at 605- 394- 6082, for directions to the excavation site and to make specific arrangements for your visit.)
