St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 25, 2000 SDSM& T's WEBSITE LISTED AS ONE OF WORLD HOTTEST 100 SITES! The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology's website has recently been nominated and listed in WorldHot. com as one of world's hottest 100 education sites. WorldHot. com provides a site listing service to high quality web sites and personal homepages. Websites are recognized twice a year and are rated by WorldHot. com in real time, and by all visitors to the website who judge the selected sites. Websites of good content and high traffic can be nominated for the recognition. SDSM& T was rated # 43 on the list of 100 announced today. The top three sites listed are University of California at Los Angeles, University of California at Berkeley, and The University of Sydney. To check out the SD Tech website, visit http:// www. sdsmt. edu. In May 1999 SDSM& T launched their new website utilizing the High Priority Connection Network ( HPC Net). HPC Net was founded and developed at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology by Dr. Richard Gowen, President of SDSM& T. It integrates the access of the Internet with the power of an advanced database to support individualized education and e- commerce. This Intranet network was developed through an extensive five year research program to create automated infrastructure rich software that connects people with needs to others who can provide the needed services, education and products. The Network provides access to quality rated educational resources to enhance the learning of each individual student. It supports the review and classification with standards of educational resources in an adaptive directory system. Educational resources can be accessed through the popular Internet search engines and directories serving intranet teaching and learning communities linking teachers, students, and parents. " The High Priority Connection Network was developed to serve the needs of rural America. The state of South Dakota, through the leadership of Governor Bill Janklow, is completing an innovative program to connect the public and private K- 12 schools in a high performance educational network, " said Gowen. " Nearing completion, this network will be able to simultaneously connect three of each four students in a classroom to a wide range of educational resources. Additionally, these high capacity networks to the schools will include libraries and provide rural communities with opportunities for e- commerce and development services. Such extensive networks will make it feasible to enhance the learning of each student using the advanced infrastructure capabilities of the Network."
