St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 3388 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 10, 2000 SPEARFISH MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS WIN HONORS AT HIGH PLAINS REGIONAL SCIENCE & ENGINEERING FAIR Fourteen students from Spearfish Middle School won honors at the 45th Annual High Plains Regional Science & Engineering Fair held recently on the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T). Niklas Peters won 1st Place/ 6th Grade- Physical for a science project entitled " A Sticky Situation." Derek Dillman, Karl Giuseffi, and John Schempf won 2nd Place/ 6th Grade Team for a science project entitled " How a Person Can Lay on a Bed of Nails." Steven Aldrich won 2nd Place/ 7th Grade- Physical for a project entitled " Wavelengths: How Long Can They Go?" Jessica Richey won 3rd Place/ 7th Grade- Biology for a project entitled " Twins II." Kris Chalmers and Jeremy Fremont won 1st Place/ 7th Grade Team for their project entitled " Hovercraft vs. Environment." Andrew Dorfschmidt and Evan Follette won 3rd Place/ 7th Grade Team for their project entitled " Poinsettias, the Christmas Flower." Emily Oldenkamp and Lindsay Sendan won 4th Place/ 7th Grade Team for their project entitled " Identifying Bacteria." Julia Doyle and Leslie Reiswig won 5th Place/ 7th Grade Team for their project entitled " Male or Female?" Other students from Spearfish who competed in the event and their project titles are as follows: Name Project The 45th Annual High Plains Regional Science & Engineering Fair featured more than 400 middle and high school students from more than two dozen West River schools competing in various science and engineering categories.
