St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 29, 2000 NAU GRADUATE HONORED BY SOUTH DAKOTA SCHOOL OF MINES & TECHNOLOGY Northern Arizona University graduate Dr. Robin Lipke was recently selected by the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) as recipient of the 2000 Benard A. Ennenga Award. Dr. Richard Gowen, president of SDSM& T, will present her with the award during the 49th Annual SDSM& T Honors Convocation held Thursday, March 30, 2000. The Benard A. Ennenga Faculty Award was established by Mr. Ennenga to recognize any teaching assistant, teaching associate, instructor, assistant professor, associate professor, or full professor at SDSM& T who has demonstrated excellence in teaching and/ or motivating students. This year's recipient is Robin J. Lipke, Assistant Professor, Department of Social Sciences. Dr. Lipke received her B. S. and M. A. from Northern Arizona University, and her Ph. D. from the University of Montana. Dr. Lipke's nomination supported not only her excellence in teaching but also her ability to motivate, excite, and challenge her students. Since the spring 1999 semester, over 500 students have enrolled in her courses because of their desire to participate in her academic environment. Her student evaluations remain extremely high even with these large classes, the required written papers, the essay exams, and her demand for critical thinking. During the past calendar year, she has personally evaluated over 2, 000 examinations and read nearly 1, 000 student papers and written assignments. Dr. Lipke's motivation of students also extends beyond the classroom. On top of her regular office hours, she devotes an average of 10 to 20 hours per week consulting and advising students seeking her console. As the result of Dr. Lipke's influence, students have developed a greater knowledge of the field of psychology, utilized critical thinking, improved their communication skills, and most importantly, acquired a greater understanding of themselves and others. Mr. Ennenga graduated from SDSM& T with a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering in 1949. A year later, he received his master's degree in Chemical Engineering from Montana State University and began his long career with the Amoco Oil Company.
