Dr. Richard Gowen, president of SDSM& T, presented him with the award during the 49th Annual SDSM& T Honors Convocation held March 30. Dr. Goss, Professor, Department of Social Sciences SDSM& T, received the Virginia Simpson Award. This award was established by Mrs. Virginia Simpson, a long- time supporter of Tech and active community member, to help support and encourage new or continued involvement by SDSM& T faculty or staff with the Rapid City community. Dr. Goss received his B. S., M. S., and Ph. D. degrees from South Dakota State University. In nominating Dr. Goss for this award, Darrell Sawyer, Director, Office of Career Planning and Placement, noted that Dr. Goss should be nicknamed the " Campus Community Service Ambassador" due to his extensive involvement in local, regional, and state organizations. His nomination paid particular attention to Dr. Goss' volunteer work on programs that benefit children in the community. His involvement includes: member of the Board of Directors for the Children's Miracle Network Telethon since 1987, and is currently Chair of the Board; Chair of the Rapid City Public School Foundation; member of the Unlimited Learning Foundation Board, and United Way Board of Directors. In addition to his civic efforts on behalf of Children, Dr. Goss fosters interaction between the campus and the community in numerous other ways as well. He also serves on the Boards of Directors of the Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation, the Mount Rushmore Memorial Society, and the Black Hills Regional Eye Institute. He has served many leadership roles for the Rapid City Chamber of Commerce, the Rapid City Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the Rapid City Rotary Club. ++ 30++ ( i:\ univrel\ pressrele\ 0400\ Honors Convocation local Huron Dr. Goss)
