| Transcript | Program Initiation Grants Si Tanka College – " Computer Science Degree with Emphasis on GIS/ RS Technologies" • focus is on faculty development in the ability to use GIS • Develop expertise in GIS and teach classes and expand programs • Dr. Maribeth Price is teaching faculty at Si Tanka about GIS, the faculty are taking courses from Dr. Price • Trying to develop resources ( software, computers etc…) to support the training • Mike Collins, 605- 964- 8011 • PIG is 10, 000 through Tech, using as seed money to kick off a larger more proactive program dealing with curriculum development in science and natural resources area for Si Tanka College • The money is allowing faculty members and staff members to gain expertise in some critical areas, primarily the use of GPS global positioning system, GIS geographic information system, and remote sensing – state of the art technological tools using geographically related information from a multitude of sources, satellite info., imagery, high altitude aerial photos, or information collected on ground using GPS , a hand held locator triangulates up to off of 7 satellites, tells you your location on surface of the earth within less than 1 meter, expedites gathering of scientific data – counting plant types, grass types, locating fence line, allows you to collect info into a hand held computer you can bring back to the office and download the info into a PC, computer then uses GIS system to create maps, charts, graphs, analyze data and manage information • Using equipment from TREMBOL acquiring equipment, building a GIS laboratory in facility with 10 PCs, not purchased by PIG grant • PIG grant allows us to get started with staff training so we can in turn teach how to use the other equipment, field data collection equipment, office analytical equipment • Program initiation money, paying for travel and training for staff and faculty • Other grant equipment and integrate it in with regular science and agricultural courses for credit courses and also continuing education courses • Faculty have begun to take courses, used spring break to take courses taught by Dr. Price, taught us 3- day crash course on GIS – using a whole software package • Mico28@ hotmail. com • e- mail draft of press release Wounded Knee School District – " Learn About the Earth: A Hands- On Environmental Earth Science Education Program" • buying equipment, doing sampling, get earth science curriculum started • Jeff McDonald, 605- 867- 1176 • |
