St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 28, 2000 Margaret Surbeck, wife of the late Leighton Homer Surbeck, passed away Thursday, January 27 at the age of 84 at her home in Atherton, California. Margaret, who was the widow of Gordon Packard, met Homer Surbeck in 1975 at a religious retreat in Bermuda. After a brief conversation in which the future husband and wife discovered they had everything in common from family makeup to religious beliefs and personal habits, Margaret and Homer knew they were meant to be together. On Homer's 74th birthday, October 8, 1976, the couple was married. In Homer's book entitled " The Success Formula That Really Works, " Homer stated: " Marriage with Margaret has ever since been the most rewarding and unexpected payoff in happiness and satisfaction in life that anyone could possibly have." Homer and Margaret Surbeck have been very dear friends of the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Homer graduated with honors in 1924 in Metallurgical Engineering from the School of Mines and went on to graduate first in his class from Yale Law School in 1927. Over 1, 000 scholarships have been awarded to young people on the Surbeck's behalf at various institutions including SDSM& T, Brigham Young University, a prize in geology at Princeton University, and a prize for Outstanding Technical Writing at SDSM& T. Since 1949 Homer gave Rapid City High School, and later Rapid City Central and Rapid City Stevens High Schools, an amount of $ 3, 000 each year for senior scholarships. Homer also made substantial contributions to furnish Guy March- Math Scholarships. Surbeck also contributed generously to many campus building projects over the years, including the Surbeck Student Center and the Darold " Dud" King Physical Education Center. In 1963 the South Dakota Board of Regents dedicated the Surbeck Center on the Tech campus in his honor.
