St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 7, 2000 SDSM& T TO SPONSOR SOUTH DAKOTA FUTURE FAIR JANUARY 14- 15, 2000 Mark your calendars for South Dakota Future Fair's CELEBRATE TECHNOLOGY - 2000 to be held January 14- 15 at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center. The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology is one of nine corporate sponsors for the event that will give visitors the opportunity to take a look at the present and future state of technology. The two- day event will showcase technological products and services we utilize today and will continue to use in the future. The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology will have displays from the Institute of Atmospheric Sciences ( IAS), Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, Children's Science Center, Museum of Geology, South Dakota Space Grant Consortium, undergraduate and graduate admissions, and student vehicle teams to include the Mini- Indy, Concrete Canoe, and Solar Car. IAS will have a computer- based remote sensing display that will allow folks to zoom in on various areas in Rapid City using image data collected from satellites in orbit around the earth, and will have an atmospheric sampling ( weather) balloon. The CEE Department will have an exhibit for bridge constructions that utilize composite materials, and visitors will also be able to learn about the Children's Science Center and sign up for family, or classroom memberships. The Museum of Geology will be demonstrating the use of technologies of prehistoric specimens, and will have fossils and CT scans on display. Keynote speakers at the two- day event will be The Madman of Magic Bob Friedhoffer; Dr. Kevin Freiberg, co- author of " NUTS! Southwest Airlines' Crazy Recipe for Business and Personal Success;" and astronaut Dr. Kalpana Chawla. Friedhoffer will give performances at various times throughout the event; Freiberg will be speaking Friday evening at 7: 00 pm in the Theater; and Dr. Chawla will be speaking Saturday evening at 7: 00 pm in the Theater. Chair of the 2000 Future Fair is Mutch Usera of Black Hills Power and Light Company. The mission of this year's Future Fair is " to promote the celebration of companies, researchers, and organizations in our communities that are developing, building and implementing technologies of the future to enhance positive growth in education and economic development." South Dakota Future Fair's CELEBRATE TECHNOLOGY 2000 will be held Friday, January 14 from 9: 00 am 4: 00 pm, and Saturday, January 15 from 9: 00 am 7: 00 pm.
