DANIEL TURNER ANNOUNCED AS ENGINEERS WEEK 2000 COLLOQUIUM SPEAKER Dr. Daniel Turner of the University of Alabama will be the Colloquium Speaker during Engineers Week 2000 February 20- 26 at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. Dr. Turner will be presenting a show entitled " The World's Oldest Civil Engineering Professor, " on Wednesday, February 23 at 9: 30 am and 3: 00 pm in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. Donning a costume suitable for a professor of the mid – 1800' s, Dr. Turner will portray a 178- year- old professor, Frederick Augustus Porter Barnard. Old F. A. P., as Barnard was nicknamed, will pack a lifetime of experiences into a 60- 90 minute comedy prepared for the middle school, high school, and college students, and the general public who will be in attendance. As an Engineers Week brochure describes, Old F. A. P. " was best at everything he did. He wrote the best sonnet, the best love story, took the best picture, charmed the most women, caught the most trout, calculated the best almanac and excelled at anything else he wanted to do. He was a brilliant scientist and the first man to teach engineering in the state of Alabama." Dr. Daniel Turner has been portraying Old F. A. P. since 1986 when he gave his first performance for the University of Alabama's 150th year celebration. Dr. Turner is professor and head of the department of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, and past National president of the American Society of Civil Engineers ( ASCE). His specialization and research interests are traffic safety, traffic engineering, highway design and operations, and policy.
