St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 12, 2000 23RD ANNUAL NATIONAL ENGINEERS WEEK TO TAKE PLACE FEBRUARY 20- 26 The South Dakota School of Mines & Technology has scheduled a wide variety of special activities and programs to celebrate the 23rd Annual National Engineers Week February 20- 26, 2000. The engineers and scientists at the School of Mines have joined forces with the practicing engineers of the Black Hills Chapter of the South Dakota Engineering Society, scientists and K- 12 teachers to show " Engineers Make a World of Difference." The campus will kick off Engineers Week activities on Friday, February 18 with Bridge Strength Testing. SDSM& T students, technicians and faculty will test the maximum load of the cardboard bridges built by junior and senior high school students. Testing of the bridges will begin at 2: 15 pm in the Physical Plant Building. On Wednesday, February 23 Colloquium Speaker Dr. Daniel Turner from the University of Alabama will be giving a talk entitled " The World's Oldest Civil Engineering Professor." Dr. Turner will be speaking to middle school students at 9: 30 am, and with high school, SDSM& T students, and the public at 3: 00 pm. Both discussions will be held in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. Mayor Jim Shaw will read his Engineers Week Proclamation on Thursday, February 24 during a lunch program held in the Surbeck Student Center Ballroom. The luncheon will also recognize SDSM& T's 2000 Outstanding Recent Graduates and initiate new members into the Order of the Engineer. The program begins at 11: 00 am. Engineers Week will conclude on Saturday, February 26 with the Computer Programming Contest for high school students. The contest will take place from 9: 30 am – 3: 30 pm and will be held in the Electrical Engineering/ Physics Building, Room 342. West River Area 7th and 8th graders will also be getting into the action when they compete in the Mathcounts competition at 1: 00 pm in the Classroom Building, room 204. Mathcounts is sponsored by the South Dakota Engineering Society, Black Hills Chapter. There is no charge for any of the activities except the Thursday luncheon and Friday banquet events for which reservations are required. Reservations are required to attend Kid's Block Contest on February 19.
