TranscriptOffice of University Relations SDSM& T News 501 E. St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 25, 2000 CARGILL Funds New Biotech Curriculum at SDSM& T Cargill, Inc. has awarded a three- year $ 285, 000 grant to the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology to support the development of new curriculum in biotechnology and biochemical engineering. The grant also includes funding for programs in SDSM& T's mechanical and metallurgical engineering departments. " Thanks to Cargill, undergraduates at the School of Mines can be assured they will be given the highest level of education and training possible to help prepare them for careers in industry, " said Dr. Richard Gowen, President of SDSM& T. " This grant builds upon Cargill's long- standing relationship with SD Tech and shows commitment to its graduates by ensuring they are equipped with the skills needed to excel in industries worldwide that are seeing dramatic technological advances." The largest portion of the grant will be used to strengthen the biochemical engineering track within the Chemical Engineering department. This will be accomplished through faculty development, curriculum modification, and improved laboratory facilities and equipment. With these in place the department hopes to attract and hire a new faculty member in the biotechnology area. The remainder of the funds will be used to upgrade mechanical engineering undergraduate teaching laboratories, and for laboratory and web- based materials for steel metallurgy and iron reduction technologies. SD Tech will use Cargill funds to replace outdated experimental equipment in mechanical engineering laboratories with commercially available, turnkey, self- contained modular equipment. In the Department of Materials and Metallurgical Engineering, funds will be directed towards the acquisition of laboratory equipment and the development of web- based instructional modules. " Cargill has hired more engineers from the School of Mines in the last five years than from any other college or university in the United States, " said Laurie Chamberlin, operations manager for Cargill's Dry Corn Milling Unit. " Helping the school develop the most relevant curriculum and materials is useful to both Cargill and the SDSM& T by keeping high quality graduates coming into industry." Chamberlin, a SD Tech graduate led the team of Cargill representatives who worked with SDSM& T in developing the proposal. - more - - Page 2 - The grant is being funded by Cargill and five of its business units involved in biotechnology. It is part of Cargill's Higher Education Initiative which seeks to build mutually beneficial partnerships between Cargill and key universities. SDSM& T is one of 16 schools selected for funding through this $ 4 million initiative. Cargill is an international marketer, processor and distributor of agricultural, food, financial and industrial products with some 82, 000 employees in 59 countries. ++ 30++ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 0100 Cargill fxd stwd)
