TranscriptJanuary 24, 2000 The Cargill Higher Education Initiative recently awarded the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology more than $ 400, 000 in support of improvements in three areas, biochemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and steel metallurgy and iron reduction technologies. The grant will extend a period of three years and will allow SD Tech to respond to the changing needs of industry and advances in technology. The largest portion of the grant will be used to strengthen the biochemical engineering track within the Chemical Engineering department. This will be accomplished through faculty development, curriculum modification, and improved laboratory facilities and equipment. With these in place the department hopes to attract and hire a new faculty member in the biotechnology area. The remainder of the funds will be used to upgrade mechanical engineering undergraduate teaching laboratories, and for laboratory and web- based materials for steel metallurgy and iron reduction technologies. Cargill's Higher Education Initiative seeks to build mutually beneficial relationships with key schools that provide measurable value to Cargill business. Their primary objective is to increase Cargill's access to the best people and ideas relevant to their business' future by supporting select projects with significant strategic grants.
