Obrigewitch, a senior civil and environmental engineering major at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology, presented the paper co- authored by Charles Baker ( CE, Rapid City), Rhaub Walker ( CEE, Rapid City), Terry Collins ( MS CEE, Rapid City), and M. R. Hansen, Associate Professor of civil and environmental engineering. As described by ASCE, " Past national ASCE award- winning canoe teams are showcased in this revealing session illustrating the leadership needed to design, construct, and race competitive concrete canoes. Three of the top U. S. universities outline their successful approaches. Students, educators, and practitioners will want to hear these innovations!" This statement was certainly appropriate as more than 100 people attended the session. The three universities included SDSM& T, the University of Alabama- Huntsville, and Florida Institute of Technology. These three universities have won the national championship a total of six times between them. According to Dr. Hansen, " The concrete used in these canoes is simply a specialized form of high- performance concrete. High- performance concrete will be used by virtually every civil engineer in the future construction and maintenance of the nation's infrastructure. Furthermore, the experience gained in the organization and management of a large project such as the concrete canoe will provide abilities vital in the future success of our civil engineers on the job." The paper from SDSM& T, entitled " Concrete Canoe Design and Construction Developments at SDSMT, " can be accessed in the book Forming Civil Engineer's Future, published by ASCE. ++ 30++ ( I: univrel/ pressrel/ 0100 ASCE paper presentation local Wiboux MT) |
