St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 21, 1999 Harrison Native Honored at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology 140TH Commencement Gary Veurink a native of Harrison was among the five alumni honored as recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award during the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology's ( SDSM& T) 140th commencement. Nominees were evaluated based on four categories level of professional achievement, evidence of significant and creative professional activity, involvement in professional or business organizations, and balance of community and professional service and awards. Gary Veurink currently resides in Midland, Michigan. He received his BS in Chemical Engineering from SDSM& T in 1972. He joined Dow's Michigan Division upon graduation from SDSM& T in their Electro and Mechanical Research group and during the next several years worked as a production engineer and the production supervisor in Chlor- Alkali. In 1978 he was named superintendent of Production Services in Bay City, followed by roles as the superintendent of the Bay City Refinery and Terminal and as the superintendent of the Midland 2, 4- D plant. In 1981 he was named technical manager of the Environmental Control group in Michigan Division and later became the environmental manager for Michigan Division. He moved to Ohio as site manager of the Licking River Film Center in 1985, and, in 1987, he returned to Midland to become director of Quality Performance for the U. S. Area. In 1990, he moved to Texas Operations as manager of Materials Management. In 1994, Veurink was named General Manager of the Asset Utilization Resources Division of Texas Operations. He was appointed as the Global Manufacturing Director for Engineering Plastics in 1995 and named to his present position as Vice President, Global Purchasing, in 1998. Veurink has served on numerous community boards and leadership positions while in Michigan, Ohio and Texas. In 1995 he led the creation of the SDSM& T Academic Advisory Council at SDSM& T and acted as the Chairman for the first three years of its existence. He currently continues on the council as an active member, and he is a Vision 2000 National Co- Chair for the SDSM& T Foundation's capital campaign. The other recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award for this year are Frank F. Aplan ( Metallurgical Engineering ' 48), James V. Chittick ( Chemical Engineering ' 63), William L. Reuter ( Electrical Engineering ' 56 , MS EE ' 58), and Peter N. Stephans ( Electrical Engineering ' 68, MS Electrical Engineering ' 69). The commencement address was delivered by Dr. Theodore Gull, Astrophysicist at the NASA Laboratory for Astronomy and Solar Physics at Goddard Space Flight Center. An Honorary Doctorate of Science degree will be conferred on Dr. Gull during the ceremony.
