St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 21, 1999 Hartford Native Honored at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology 140TH Commencement Dr. William Reuter was among the five alumni honored as recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award during the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology's ( SDSM& T) 140th commencement. Nominees were evaluated based on four categories – level of professional achievement, evidence of significant and creative professional activity, involvement in professional or business organizations, and balance of community and professional service and awards. Reuter earned his BS in Electrical Engineering in 1956 and his MS in Electrical Engineering in 1958 from SDSM& T. He was Instructor of Electrical Engineering at SDSM& T from 1956 to 1958, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering from 1960 to 1966, and Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering from 1966 to 1972 at SDSM& T. He received his Ph. D. in Electrical Engineering from Iowa State University in 1967. During his time at SDSM& T, Reuter developed and taught numerous courses, including the first computer courses. He has seven patents and several publications to his credit, including Circuits, Signals and Networks with C. W. Cox, in 1969. From 1972 to 1979 Reuter was Manager of Research and Development for Dunham Associates, Inc. in Rapid City. From 1979 to 1996 he was employed with Pete Lien & Sons, where he held the positions of Chief Engineer and Quarry Division Manager. He retired as Vice President of Operations. Reuter has been active in business development, including being a co- founder of several local companies— SymCom, Rapidata, and Re/ Spec. He has also been on the Board of Directors for all three companies. He has received the Outstanding Educator of America and Standard Oil Good Teaching Awards. He is actively involved in several community service organizations: Rapid City Rotary Club, American Red Cross, and Rapid City School District Board of Education. He was the Chairman of the 1980 Tech Alumni Reunion and is currently a National Co- Chair for the SDSM& T Foundation's capital campaign. The other recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award for this year are Frank Aplan ( Metallurgical Engineering ' 48), James V. Chittick ( Chemical Engineering ' 63), ( Electrical Engineering ' 56 , MS EE ' 58), ), Peter N. Stephans ( Electrical Engineering ' 68, MS Electrical Engineering ' 69), and Gary R. Veurink ( Chemical Engineering ' 72). The commencement address was delivered by Dr. Theodore Gull, Astrophysicist at the NASA Laboratory for Astronomy and Solar Physics at Goddard Space Flight Center.
