St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE December 21, 1999 Aberdeen Native Honored at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology 140TH Commencement James Chittick, a native of Aberdeen was among the five alumni honored as recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award during the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology's ( SDSM& T) 140th commencement. Nominees were evaluated based on four categories – level of professional achievement, evidence of significant and creative professional activity, involvement in professional or business organizations, and balance of community and professional service and awards. Chittick received his BS in Chemical Engineering from SDSM& T in 1963. He began his career with Dow Corning after graduating from SDSM& T, and held various management positions in manufacturing before being named Section Manager for Process Engineering Rubber in 1974. He became Production Superintendent for the Rubber Unit in 1975. He was appointed Materials Flow Manager for Europe in 1976 followed by the Seneffe Plant Manager position in 1978. In 1980, he returned to the U. S. and was named Elizabethtown Plant Manager. Chittick's next assignment was Director of Facilities Engineering in 1985; he was selected as Director of Quality Management in 1989. In January 1992, he was elected as U. S. Area Vice President and Director of Quality and Supply. He became Corporate Director of Human Resources in 1993. He was named to his current position, Executive Director of Manufacturing and Engineering in February 1995 and elected as Corporate Vice President in March 1995. In January 1999 as the company moved to a more customer- driven organization, his title changed to Vice President of Supply Chains. James Chittick currently resides in Midland, MI. Chittick is a member of the Chemical Manufacturer's Association. He is also active in community affairs. He has been on the United Way Board of Directors; he has served as president and treasurer. He has also been on their Executive Committee. He has been a member of the Midland Area Community Quality Council, and a Vision 2000 National Leader for the SDSM& T Foundation's capital campaign. The other recipients of the Distinguished Alumni Award for this year are Frank F. Aplan ( Metallurgical Engineering ' 48), William L. Reuter ( Electrical Engineering ' 56 , MS EE ' 58), and Peter N. Stephans ( Electrical Engineering ' 68, MS Electrical Engineering ' 69), and The commencement address was delivered by Dr. Theodore Gull, Astrophysicist at the NASA Laboratory for Astronomy and Solar Physics at Goddard Space Flight Center.
