Bird educators from the Raptor Center have brought Volta the Bald Eagle with them and will present shows at the Children's Science Center to help educate people about eagles in an effort to keep them off of the endangered species list. Shows will take place on Tuesday, December 14 at 1: 00 am and 7: 00 pm, and on Wednesday, December 15 at 11: 00 am and 7: 00 pm. The Alaska Raptor Center is located in Sitka, Alaska. The Center's mission is to treat, rehabilitate, and release wild birds, educate the public about wild bird habitat and their ecology, and to support and conduct research pertaining to the medical treatment of wild birds. In 1997 birds and bird educators traveled to over 100 classrooms in the United States to teach children about raptors. The education is a strategic focus of the Alaska Raptor Center in hopes that by educating people about eagles the animals will not return to the endangered species list by the hand of man. Since 1980 the Alaska Raptor Center has helped many eagles and other wild birds return to the wild. Those birds whose injuries are too severe for them to be released either stay on at the Center to help in educating the public, or are placed in other facilities with similar missions. In addition to education, the Center offers training in the field of eagle medicine and care. Internships in the fields of veterinary medicine, zookeeping, education and bird training provide up- close, hands- on experience for interns to work with the eagles. Additional courses are taught in physical therapy, technician skills, bird identification, and wild bird rescue throughout the United States. The presentations by the Alaska Raptor Center are being sponsored by RPM of Rapid City and are free and open to the public. For visitors who wish to tour the Science Center, admission is $ 2.00 or 2 cans of food for the Black Hills Regional Food Bank.
