St. Joseph Street • Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 • Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ( August??, 2000) RESULTS OF STUDENT REU RESEARCH PRESENTED IN POSTER SESSION AT SDSM& T FRIDAY, JULY 28 The Research for Undergraduates program ( REU) wound up on Friday, July 28 with a Poster Session in the Surbeck Center. The seven students presented the results of their assigned research projects to interested students, professors, and the public. The REU program, which is funded by the National Science Foundation, aims to expand student participation in all types of research, and is open to undergraduate students. The program allows students to experience first- hand how basic research is carried out. While the group of students participating in this summer's two- month program at SDSM& T came from universities around the nation, several were SDSM& T students. " The REU program gave me the chance to try something completely different. It was a great experience. The professors were extremely helpful, " commented Debbie Morgan, a SDSM& T Chemistry student " The program didn't just teach me about research, but about documentation, communication and presentation. It was a very well rounded experience. It was great to start the project from scratch, watch it develop and then see the finished product." Ryan Caldwell, also a SDSM& T student added " I think the most valuable part of the program was learning problem- solving skills. The communication skills we learned will also be valuable regardless of whether or not I decide to go into research." One of the special features of this program is the emphasis on faculty- student mentoring, developing the research and communication skills of the participants. " The REU/ AMP undergraduate researchers are given the opportunity to work side- by- side with faculty mentors and graduate students gaining invaluable research experience in their field of study, " said Robb Winter, Professor of Chemical Engineering. " The entire REU/ AMP experience is designed to help the students gain a greater perspective into their career choice and the research enterprise."
