Freshmen, Non- Traditional and Transfer Orientation at the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology ( SDSM& T) begins Thursday, August 26 and lasts until Monday, August 30, 1999. The student Orientation Committee has structured the five days of activities for students to meet their classmates and learn about Tech. SDSM& T has a wide range of orientation activities scheduled this weekend for new students— including a scavenger hunt, a dance, the President's Picnic, movie at the Elks Theater, and an entertainer. In addition to orientation sessions about academic and campus life geared toward freshmen, SDSM& T also offeres orientation programs for the parents of freshmen, as well as special sessions focused on non- traditional and transfer students. Coupled with various social, friendship- building and leadership development activities, the orientation program for SDSM& T's entering students includes an opening campus convocation, dedication of the freshman plaque, mentor/ advisor meetings, math review sessions preceding the math placement exam, department open houses, chemistry and physics placement exams, and student life skits. At 7: 00 p. m. Monday, special entertainment will be provided under the Arches in the Quad by Taylor Mason, who combines music, comedy, ventriloquism, audience participation and his incurably happy optimism to entertain. Mason is one of the hottest acts on the college market having played in over 750 colleges. He performs regularly on network and cable television, and headlines at major comedy clubs.
