St. Joseph Street Rapid City, SD 57701- 3995 Phone: ( 605) 394- 6082/ 2554 Fax: ( 605) 394- 6177 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE August 24, 1999 LOCAL STUDENT RECOGNIZED FOR HER PARTICIPATION ON SDSM& T ORIENTATION COMMITTEE Jamie Mathison of Omaha was recently recognized for her participation on the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology Orientation Committee for the Fall 1999 semester. Mathison is a senior, metallurgical engineering major at Tech. The Orientation Committee worked together to develop a five- day orientation program for freshman, transfer, and non- traditional students entering their first year at SDSM& T August 26- 30, 1999. The activities planned focused on meeting others, learning about Tech, and having fun. A wide range of orientation activities were scheduled -- including a scavenger hunt, a dance, the President's Picnic, movie at the Elks Theater, and an entertainer. In addition to orientation sessions geared toward fun and meeting new people, the most important events included the Math, Chemistry, and Physics placement exams, meetings with mentors, and class registration. Other students who served on the Orientation Committee and their home town included: Amy Landreth, Chadron NE; Jamie Gramm, Brooke Dinger, and Jason Lamont, Aberdeen; Amy Williams, Rapid City; Jill Soldatke, Sioux Falls; Brianna Griffith, Escondido CA; Ben Simpson, Buffalo Gap, Julie Schochenmaier, Bonesteel; Shirleine Kleppe, Hot Springs; Jennie Wilson, Hastings MN; Colleen Manning, Burbank; Chris Ahlers, Pierre; Anna Miller, Bloomfield NE; Abe Kean, Pierre; Anthony Raaphorst, Rapid City; Hank Hollenbeck, Timberlake; Paul Chilson, Sisseton; Travis DeWeese, Spearfish; Heidi Jochim, Dupree; Jason Thuringer, Parkston; Steve Walker, Green River WY; and Alexa Maxwell, Box Elder. ++ 30++ Photo Caption: Jamie Mathison of Omaha receives congratulations from SDSM& T President Dr. Richard Gowen for her participation on the SDSM& T Orientation Committee.
